There are two ways to make these tasty treats…the easy way, and the hard way.  I’m a person who likes to make things simple, so I don’t know how to make them the hard way. Go Google “bunelos” and I’m sure you’ll find a bunch of ways to make it really difficult for yourself.

But, if you like things easy, then read on.

The Easy Way

It’s not really tough to make buñelos. You just need to fry up some flour tortillas in vegetable oil and dredge in a cinnamon-sugar blend and olé! You now have a quick, sweet tasty treat to enjoy.  Now, I just happened to be making homemade flour tortillas, so this took about five extra minutes to make dessert, but you can use store bought tortillas.

I don’t like to eat them in one whole go, but if you have kids, this is probably the way they’ll do it. That is the way I sure did when I was a little girl and my mom would make them for me.

Serving Suggestions

If you want to really enjoy these, just serve them with some fresh strawberries, or vanilla ice cream, or better yet, both.

Don’t forget to sprinkle extra cinnamon sugar over the top of all.

Equipment

  • Skillet
  • tongs

Ingredients

  • 10 flour tortillas
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/8 cup cinnamon
  • 1 cup sugar

Instructions

  • Mix cinnamon and sugar on a small plate and set aside. Adjust the ratio to your liking.
  • In a skillet over medium-high heat, pour oil and heat up.
  • Place one each tortilla carefully in the hot oil. When the tortilla has crisped up after a few minutes, use the tongs to flip it to the other side. The more you fry, the crispier the buñuelo will become.
  • When the buñuelo is fried to your liking, pick it, letting the extra oil drop off in the pan, and then place on paper towels to remove the excess oil.
  • Quickly dredge in cinnamon-sugar blend to coat.
  • Serve whole or break apart and serve as wafers over ice cream.
