fifty fifty smoothie

My mom came over the other day so we could run an errand together at lunchtime. And—lucky for me—she brought over a bag of oranges from her neighbor’s backyard. Gifts of food is really important in my family. I knew I had to do justice to these citrus beauties. And what better way to do so than to make a special smoothie treat out of them? Enter the Orange Creamsicle Smoothie.

I started with the fruit of honor, and cut off the peel.

Then, I cut them up into slices and froze them.

When they were “frozen enough” (about 1 hour), I pulled them out. Then, I pulled out the other ingredients: vanilla, milk, coconut water, agave. Then I put those oranges into my Vitamix along with all the ingredients, and blended it up.

Equipment

  • large capacity blender (64 ounces) such as Vitamix

Ingredients

  • 2 cups frozen orange slices
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1/3 cup coconut water
  • 2 tablespoon agave or to taste
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Put all ingredients in a blender and blend until desired consistency.

Notes

The sweetness of the oranges may vary, so try a piece in order to determine how much agave to add. My batch had oranges that were a little tart, so I added 2 tablespoons. You may not need that much.
